Windsurfing: Camber Sands - Las Dunas Wind Direction: SW Wind Stength: WINDY !!! Surf / Sea State: waves & foam - PARTY TIME Air Temperature: chilly feeling Sea Temperature: ok Weather: overcast to pissing down and back to overcast Max Speed: Distance Covered:
This one looked a dead cert from way out ... dubbed Big Wednesday by some
even ... but with high tide at 2pm and the wind filling in from mid morning
on it needed to be a local dawn raid or maybe a late afterworker if the
wind held ... or a trip to Camber for the best high tide option around
these parts.
Got there to find a few already parked up at Las Dunas and rigging. Jon
Harmer was on the early shift and had rigged a relic with a 5m,
Shawndawavehead was considering options, Justin went 4.7m on his Goya,
couple others on 5.0m - 4.7m and 85ltr wave boards. Shame the Geriatric One
couldn't make it as I reckon he'd have gone big and stuck with it.
Eventually I opted 4.7m on the twin 84 preferring to be well powered in
onshore conditions as opposed to being sacrificial offering to the foam
gods. Just as I'd made my decision a couple came back over the dunes
changing down to 4.2m & 4.5m ... but I went with 4.7m regardless.
Once over the dunes I reckoned I'd made the right choice, while Shawn had
gone 4.0m on his RRD 'ebay' wave board. I reckoned I'd got it right as
Shawn got on the rip-scalater on the inside, but to be fair he's a
flyweight and soon escaped it and was heading skyward at each given
opportunity.
4.7m felt just right to me on the twinny, for a few runs at least. Got a
few decent jumps and backside rides in but started to feel the wind
increasing a touch, which was confirmed by some guys with 4.2m's claiming
they were well 'stacked'. Couple more runs to make sure I wasn't just being
some daft great jessie, and time to bin the 4.7m in favour of the 4.2m.
I wasn't alone making the return journey to change down. Got back to van,
rigged the 4.2m, and upset a few folks who'd rigged 4.7's ....
Nice to see TimBass pitch up, though he looked to be a 3.7m short of having
a good time, with his 4.2m proving to be pretty full on for him.
Yep, it was that windy (though I suspect that the geriatric would have been
on a 4.7m all day and some slalom style wave board had he been able to get
away ... hope he's not reding this as he seemed pretty pi$$ed off when I
texted him) and it wasn't long before 4.2m was too big !!!
Waves were shaping up in places and choppy in other sections. Seeking out
the sweet spots to ride was fun, and as ever some sections well over head
high were sneaking up on us. The rip-scalator was on overtime around high
tide, and the foam machine was taking few prisoners. I was really pleased
with how well the twin fin 84 worked escaping and how in control it felt,
even when I wasn't. If it doesn't jump as high as regular boards, then I'm
pretty pleased as I was getting plenty high enough on it.
Some of the sailing felt like survival training, and other parts pure joy.
The worst bit was the rain when it came through, and it actually feeling
quite chilly.
I had a good 2-3 hours on the water in all, but felt my fitness waining and
hunger kicking in so called it a day before I got over eager and damaged
something.
Saw RobsterRRD head out just before I left on his turquoise kiddy rig,
heading up to Little Maui to join Judo John, Sam, Richard, Shawn and a few
others.
There were probably 10-15 of us out and I'm sure the afterwork posse's will
enjoy the leftovers at Jury's this evening too.
Quality session, though I do prefer it a little less manic with cleaner
waves .... like last Friday
No complaints though .... cream crackered and happy
